The "Old Downtown Windsor", as known by its residents, was built in collaboration with private developer Orrin Thiessen and Town Green Enterprises on 10 acres that include a 4 acre town green, surrounded by three story buildings with residential occupancy on the top floors and retail and commercial space on the ground floors. The buildings exterior design is a copy of the old time architecture, based on historic photos of the region. The many businesses around the plaza include restaurants, specialty food stores, coffee shops, a pharmacy, and boutiques among others. The Windsor Community Services Department offers a variety of entertainment at the plaza, including special events with music, dance, and food. A real sense of community can be experienced when Windsor residents get together for a festival, or just a stroll around the town green, after dining or shopping at the diversified suppliers. The new downtown project received a number of awards including Sierra Club's "Best New Development in 2006", Greenbelt Alliance "Top Smart Growth City in the Bay Area", and Association of Bay Area Governments "Growing Smarter Together Award-Public Private Partnerships".
