My 17 year old is pregnant

Posted 07-25-2009 at 12:01 PM by angel-eyes05

I just found out my 17 year old daughter is pregnant with my first grandchild. My emotions jump from elation to "god she has no idea what she's in for". She will start her senior year this August, but the baby is due in Feb. Are there any programs for her to finish high school? She lives in Dallas.

I've never known of a community anywhere that doesn't have a program to help the ignorant obtain their GED (general education diploma). Suggest that she contact the community services people for directions to the the proper channels.

If she pursues it, add to your suggestion that she contact the local community college, and start taking classes as soon as she completes her GED. No one should stop with a highschool diploma, these days. In fact, my experience is that you need at least a Master's to support yourself and a family.

It's unfortunate she's starting the hard way, but sometimes the hardest lessons bear the most fruit. If she does continue her education, she'll be setting the example for her child, and that may be the best reward.

A person can always get a GED either in person or online. The real issue is, who is going to take care of this baby? If you are prepared to invest in anything, it would be counseling to help her make the right decision.
