Mommy's afraid of the "Big School"

Posted 08-12-2008 at 11:20 AM by therewego
Yesterday, one of my kiddos had a bad dream during nap. I went in to console her and scooped her up and we sat in her rocker. She was still groggy, so we cuddled a little while I stroked her hair, touched her soft cheek, then it hit me. It was right at that time when I got a wee bit emotional that her older sibling will be going to kindergarten in 2 weeks. I have been a little moody for the past few days and wonder if that is my "problem". I guess I am getting "nervous" about my oldest going to the big school (as she says it). But if only people wouldn't do me wrong, that would help too.

Have you ever read the book The Kissing Hand? It is a very sweet book that eases the worried mommy and her little one, at this stressful time. I have three of my own, and although they are 11, 13 and 14 now, I remember your feelings clearly. Get it from the library and read it together with your k-garden child. I always volunteered in the classroom once a week, too - it helped me & the kids adjust.

I agree, volunteering, as much as you're able to with your little ones, makes a big difference. It gives you a feel for so much; how your child is doing (not just academically, but if they are happy or not), the teacher's personality and the atmosphere in the classroom, getting to know the other children in the class who your child is making friends with (so you can help guide them in one direction or another if needed)... Is it 1/2 day or full day? I know though, it's hard. Hugs.
