I start my new job today

Posted 08-08-2008 at 11:07 AM by MaryS80
Monday rolled around and I was pretty nervous about not having a job. I called the best lead I had, the place I was waiting th hear from and never got ahold of HR. I got a good lead from a Barista at Starbucks and hurried over to where she said. I was pretty much hired on the spot and simply had to take a drug test. I knew passing the drug test was not going to be an issue so it was a matter of waiting for the results.

Tuesday the original place I had been waiting on calls me back. Wednesday the place that hired me on the spot called back, and told me I'd be starting Friday. I'm a little nervous, its been a long time since I've started a new job. I was at Tom Thumb for almost seven years. I was that person who knew everything about the job. I had to help train people, answer questions, and be the bosses right hand woman. Now I am the newbie

Just now as I was sitting here writing this another place called that seen my resume online. This place was an insurance agency. Having a nice office job is tempting, but I am almost certain it would involve selling. If it was some sort of receptionist job, maybe.

I feel very fortunate to have received so many offers that I can pick and choose. I am thankful that I found a job quickly in such a bad economy. I was honest about being fired from my last job. One place would not even consider me and they didn't even know the facts.

    Mary,

Congrats on the job. I just went through a similar experience (getting fired) and told the future employer (I was actually waiting on the job requisition to be approved) when it happened.

I was honest, told them what happened and voila, the job dissappeared. However, I stayed in touch, the got to thinking about the knee-jerk reaction and 2 months later, I got hired.

I was lucky. You pay a price for being honest but I'm not sure I would do that again. You simply can't take the chance. Because of that, I have spent an additional 2 months on unemployment (yes, I was vindicated) and despite that, we burned more savings. Lesson learned.

Don't be nervous. Get in there and get going. Personally, I would think the office job is more stable predicated on that particular agencies success. Starbucks is closing stores nationwide and who knows?

Retail is retail. You can ALWAYS get a retail job. Find out more about the insurance job. More stable, looks better for future jobs. Starbucks, like all retail jobs, can typecast you for the future.

    Be careful and good luck.
