Culture shock? You don't say where you are coming from.

Cortland is a small town – roughly 20,000 residents. The economy there has taken some tough hits over the years – as has large portions of Central NY. There’s not much in the way of economic growth. It’s pretty quiet, especially in the summer when the college is not in session

You’ll find the all the basics you need for shopping, but you may want to venture to Ithaca or Syracuse for a wider variety. Housing is pretty affordable, but you’ll pay a lot in property taxes if you own.

Cortland County is not particularly diverse. The winters can be long, grey and cold. Summer is very nice. Aside from the city of Cortland, the rest of the county is quite rural.

I’m sure in the metro NYC area you’ll find someone who went to SUNY Cortland who can give some perspective. A large percentage of the students come from Downstate, particularly Long Island.

Although I am a former NY'er, I haven't lived in NY for over 20 years and unable to guide you.

Your best bet is to ask questions in the proper state forum. I wish you the very best.
