North Port, Florida ~ A Great Place to Call Home!

If you are relocating to Southwest Florida and just aren't sure where to settle down, perhaps you should consider North Port.
Really, North Port is in the perfect location along interstate 75, it's just far enough away from the big cities to shield us from the high crime-rate and city slums, but close enough to them where traveling is a breeze. It's closest major city is Sarasota, which is well-known for it's shopping and arts culture. Further north are even larger cities, St. Petersburg and Tampa. To the south lies Fort Myers and Naples, two more cities to quench a thirst for the urban appeal.
Directly to the North of North Port is the city of Venice, popular for being an ideal retirement community and for beautiful beaches. Directly to the South is Port Charlotte, another great place to live with more established, older homes.
North Port itself has been a city since 1959 and will therefore be celebrating it's 50th anniversary in 2009. For a city that has been around for almost fifty years, most of North Port's developments are newer, and it's growing all the time.
North Port boasts luxurious gated communities, such as Heron Creek and Bobcat Trail as well as homes that have no deed restrictions so you can park your boat or RV at your home and everything in between. North Port has several golf courses dotten across the landscape, most of which have prestigous housing communities attached. Further north, above the interstate, you'll find North Port Estates, an equestrian community that's perfect for you to have several acres of land.
The city officials of North Port have strived to keep the city clean and neat, and it shows. They have also instigated several city beautification initives. When you first drive into the city from the interstate, you will know that you're in a place where the residents as well as the local government really care about the community.
North Port manages to maintain that home town community feel, even though it's grown and expanded so much over the last 10 years or so. North Port is not a one-grocerystore-town...we have a Walmart, 3 Publix stores, Home Depot and a Lowes!
Mostly families call North Port home. While a lot of cities in Northwest Florida are home to winter residents or retirees, North Port is a city built on family values and excellent schools. For this reason, there are a lot of things for children of all ages to do in North Port, whether it be for summertime or just afternoons and weekends. Activities in children aren't hard to find here!

SoFLGal,
Blog really good. Question is that I want to move down there next year when I retire. Becoming afraid I can not afford it after reading the Forum pages. Cann't decide wheather NP or Venice better to look at for small houses for my wife and I. What do you think? Not looking for activities, just warm, easy access to beach, and safe.Posted 10-20-2008 at 12:43 PM by topdog352

Topdog,
North Port is very affordable. You could get a 3/2/2 for at or around 100K. I don't know of many towns in Florida that you can get a home 25 minutes from the beaches for a price like that. If you took that same home and put it in Venice you would probably pay almost double.
I think you could definitely afford a home in SW Florida
Good luck with your search!

You can find a lot of small houses in North Port for well under $100,000.
I retired and moved here three years ago. the city is well run with everything my wife and I need either here in North Port or nearby Murdock, in Charlotte County, 15 minutes from my home.
Come on down. Enjoy the weather.Posted 11-29-2008 at 08:44 PM by thcodger
