A Dream Within A Dream

Posted 11-15-2013 at 12:46 AM by RotseCherut

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O G-d! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O G-d! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

Ingenious... Poe is my favourite author forever. Not only a true genius, but also, an unhappy creature who suffered his entire lifetime and died still young - and in very tragic and mysterious circumstances, and he was misinterpreted and attacked even after his death... He was poor and lonely, and all his life was a great tragedy - in some way his personality and his biography are very close to my own reality and I really love his writings, too. This one in particular, along with some other poems and tales of his. Although I generally like all his poetry and prose.

Excellent comment and thanks for sharing the history of the Master Poet. Poe is indeed one of my favorite poets and his style of writing strikes a nerve in me, as well as inspires and intrigues me.

Indeed, I know he, like so many legends of his era, suffered and struggled and were not appreciated until later.

I too feel some resemblance in my own life with that of Poe's, but perhaps, I differ in attitude and perception. Despite my struggles in life I never let go of the hope of light. I am not deeply knowledgeable about Poe's life story, but I feel the darkness perhaps consumes him more, without the ray of light shining through the darkness of the life he lived.

I haven't read his stories in a long time, but I remember enjoying them. The Raven still disturbs me, as where I live, there are many Ravens that sit and stare at me.. I feel they watch me, and so I watch them.
