Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Even With Today's Country Music, You Can Still Find Gems

Posted 02-04-2015 at 07:44 PM by case44

My niche for years has always been classic country music, since that basically was the first music genre I'd listened to on the radio with any regularity as a child. Nowadays, I've got Sirius XM, and I spend quite a bit of time listening to Channel 59, known as Willie's Roadhouse (a station championed by Willie Nelson).

Well, I just happened to be listening in my car the other day as I was eating lunch, and Charlie Monk on the mike talking about some of today's artists, as he still has a lot of connections to Nashville country singers, both past and present. I heard him talking about Alan Jackson, who I still regard as one of the very best of today's artists, who both sings good songs and writes some fabulous material. Charlie was on XM reflecting about how he didn't care for Alan's songwriting. That is, until we had 9/11 a few moons ago, and he happened to hear a song that changed his mind about Alan Jackson forever. That song was "Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning?". Regarding how Mr Monk had felt about Alan before, to me, that's a real head-scratcher. I've always liked Alan and his songs, as he employs a classic style and has rolled with the changes in the music field without damaging the integrity of the classic genre. Alan's actually done a great job of modernizing it. In a day where Nashville is spitting out some pretty crappy and rock-induced, fake country music, there are still people out there who are valiantly trying to stay as true to country's roots as possible.

You can also make a strong case for Vince Gill, Clint Black, and George Strait. They are, along with Alan Jackson, ambassadors for the country music genre in the modern era. And George, in particular, got his start during what I call "The Country Gold Era", a period from the mid-1920s all the way to 1985, and his was a career that lasted into these days, one that was among the greatest ever in the country fraternity. He may be retired from touring, but he's still going to be making music. They all still have a little gas in the tank and have something that they can give, but as George Jones once asked in one of his songs, "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes?"

Well, I really do wonder who will? Time will tell.

There is a relatively new country artist that is bringing back the 'old country' music. Check out Sturgill Simpson. He is pretty awesome.

Alan Jackson is a Tennessean hero for sure. Great music and great human being. I've had the pleasure of meeting him a few times and he is very gracious.
