Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Astros Have An Opportunity To Celebrate The Way It Should Be

Posted 09-17-2017 at 08:09 AM by case44

The real celebrating wouldn't have happened anyway where yesterday was concerned. The Houston Astros, after all, did their part in an afternoon game with an 8-6 win over the Seattle Mariners at Minute Maid Park. All they needed was a Los Angeles Angels loss to the Texas Rangers. It should be noted that the bad thing about the timing of the two games would not lend itself to a proper Houston celebration. If only the Astros had played at night and the Angels earlier that day in Anaheim.

Well, it actually worked out, I suppose.

The Rangers ended up losing to the Angels. Fine. That only sets up the Astros' magic number at one, and no matter what anyone else does today (at this writing), an Astros victory automatically clinches the American League West division crown for Houston. And in front of their home fans, no less. Perfect opportunity to cap off a weekend, wouldn't you say? Oh, and Houston has Justin Verlander starting today.

Look at it this way: If all goes according to plan, then we'll be where we want to be. Talk about a don't-miss event! This is all the more reason why the Astros just got Justin Verlander in a trade. Games like what is about to happen and what is expected to happen. It has the potential to be the most important game of this season. If he pitches today's game like the last two, then you'll see the biggest celebration the Bayou City has seen since the Astros won the 2005 National League pennant. This ticket will be worth it all if the end result is just right.

You guys have it so good right now. All you need now is to get past Cleveland. And that also means doing it once you're in the playoffs.

Astros have momentum now as they wait for Game 1 of the ALDS against the Boston Red Sox at Minute Maid Park. Will we eventually see history? I don't want to make predictions, and I don't want to jinx the 'Stros.

    Let's enjoy the playoffs.

Astros win Game 1 against Boston. Altuve smacked three home runs. No Astro had ever done that in a playoff game. Heck, Jose just joined Babe Ruth in that fraternity.

    Astros will now advance......

.........to the ALCS! All we're waiting for now is who wins the Cleveland-New York divisional series. I would love to see the Yankees win, and for this reason: If the Yankees win, then the Astros get home-field advantage. But if the Indians win, then it will be Cleveland with home-field. Hate to say this, but I've got to root for the Yankees.
