Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Great Storyline For A Team From Lubbock --- And You Can Thank Knight

Posted 04-08-2019 at 04:30 PM by case44

In many ways, regardless of how this latest NCAA men's basketball national championship turns out, Lubbock has Bob Knight to thank.

Oh, no, Coach Knight didn't directly win a national title with the Texas Tech Red Raiders, but he hired someone for his staff who can handle college students in a different sort of way. Chris Beard was just born to coach. That's right; Bob Knight hired Chris Beard and he ended up as assistant head coach. Never mind the other things which transpired after The General retired; Beard left, but when a new opportunity arose for Tech, he would come on board once again. And he really likes Lubbock.

And..........here he is now. The spotlight is now on him. Every eyeball will be fixed on Minneapolis. It's Texas Tech vs. Virginia. All the marbles will be given out tonight. Chris Beard is the toast of the Hub City already, but imagine if he gets one more win....

Bob Knight is a decade removed from the Tech scene, but he hasn't left Lubbock. Except now, an extension of him had recently moved back in. Chris Beard coaches man-to-man defense, and his version has proven more tenacious than even the most tenacious coach that's ever molded basketball minds. Yes, Knight was supposed to take Tech to the Final Four, let alone the Big One. That was the reason Gerald Myers brought him out of the cesspool that had been Indiana basketball, once a real hoops hotbed. Fast forward to now, tonight, and the same Gerald Myers has to be beaming from ear to ear. Privately, I think Knight is, too.

Chris Beard is almost done doing the impossible in Texas. While my Houston (baseball) Astros will be taking on the New York Yankees in a new series tonight in H-Town, I'll be going back and forth to the national championship game with Lubbock on the verge of celebrating. Let's see what a national championship can do for a slightly growing (but still complacent) community in need of a greater identity. The latest new hot coach in sports is Chris Beard.

Well, the Red Raiders lost, but they've made a game of it.

    Hey, maybe next year....
