Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Astros Fans Anticipate Trade Deadline And Keep Guessing

Posted 07-29-2019 at 08:48 PM by case44

The answer a few days ago was, "I don't know".

Fast forward to a few days after a few days ago, and the answer is still, "I don't know".

We've speculated a lot on how things will transpire at Major League Baseball's Trade Deadline a little over a day from right now, and so far, only the New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Toronto Blue Jays have budged.

The Houston Astros? Well, that's where my "I don't know" comes in. GM Jeff Luhnow has to make the right decision for the short term for this team. They need another starting pitcher, a consistent lefthanded reliever, and a catcher who could both field and hit. Robbie Ray (Arizona Diamondbacks), Scott Oberg (Colorado Rockies), Mike Minor (Texas Rangers), and Sam Dyson (San Francisco Giants) represent some potential pitching help for injury-riddled Houston, who has seen their Astros' major and minor league clubs get hit with the bumps and bruises. Now, don't count out Madison Bumgarner and Will Smith of the aforementioned Giants or Matthew Boyd of the Detroit Tigers as trade possibilities. The Astros may be faced with parting with top prospect Kyle Tucker, who might not be able to make his way into a crowded Houston outfield. To give up a haul, Luhnow had best get a haul in return.

We've got Wednesday. Baseball is a sport where the unexpected always happens. Things will get mightily interesting very soon.

This July 31 had one of the greatest endings to what was otherwise a rather unproductive and impactful trade season. The Houston Astros provided the punch to this year's trade deadline. They've upgraded their starting rotation and fortified their bullpen. And it didn't hurt that they re-signed Martin Maldonado at catcher.

While the results won't really be measured until the postseason, you've got to like the initial results after the arrivals of Joe Biagini and Aaron Sanchez. Can you say no-hitter?

And Zack Greinke, the guy who highlighted the trade deadline drama, will pitch Tuesday night in Houston against the Colorado Rockies.
