violent crime on rise in santa fe

Posted 12-10-2008 at 07:47 PM by grace gratz

We moved to Santa Fe because the real estate information we were given stated that this was a community of "tolerance, inclusiveness, multiculturalism, enchantment, magic, sustainability, etc." Since moving into our neighborhood where home prices begin at $300,000.00 we have experienced an ongoing escalation of violent crime, frequent nearby gunfire from passing autos in the night of the like we have never known. We live near a private nursery school where children play outside on a daily basis.

In the past few days alone on nearby St Michaels Drive [ a main avenue approximately 1 mile long ] the following was reported:

1. Last weekend a woman sitting in her car in the Wells Fargo parking lot was punched in the face and robbed.
2. On Monday at the Charter Bank across the street from Wells Fargo an armed robbery occurred. We were across the street at Smiths grocery store when this happened and as we exited the store we were greeted by a police officer with his hand on his holstered gun studying people leaving the store. This caused some panic at the store.
3. Last night in front of a store on St Michaels Drive--might have been Hallmark?--an 82 year old woman was attacked and robbed of her purse. We understand this woman was so shaken she complained that she felt she was having a heart attack and was to be hospitalized for observation.

This is only a few days of Santa Fe terror. What has been occurring here in Santa Fe vis a vis extremely violent crime occurs daily, worsens daily.

Almost forgot--this past weekend downtown in one of the most posh sections near the Lensic Theater a couple was attacked by youths brandishing guns which, fortunately proved to be toy guns. A couple of weeks ago the Santa Fe New Mexican reported that the new Waldorf School for gifted affluent children located on the edge of Santa Fe was attacked by unknown persons: All the schools windows were smashed and most of their bus windows. Damage is estimated at $40,000.00. Parties responsible have not yet been found. Some say this might be the work of a shadowy "Santa Fe Freedom Front" made up of members of very old local families who are angry because the snobbish, "imperialist" rich "Anglo" colonists overwhelming Santa Fe have, via extremely high real estate prices pushed them out of their beloved city into the desolate fringes and trailer parks near the Santa Fe Airport. We hope this is not true. We are planning to relocate to Vermont where violent crime and the epidemic marauding and petty theivery endemic to Santa Fe is all but non existent.

Smaller areas are at risk like other places but without law enforcement.
People target and it is unfair to us all.
    Caution must be used anywhere.
