Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

I-69 Update: Houston's Southwest Outskirts Signed And Nearly Signed

Posted 09-28-2022 at 08:10 PM by case44

On my last trip to Houston not very long ago, one of the priorities for me was to take a look at the progress of numerous construction projects converting U.S. Highway 59 to Interstate 69. A specific stretch just southwest of Rosenberg was spotted with new signage and completion of grade separation in a three-mile segment since I last visited the area thirteen months prior to it.

And to the southwest of Spur 10, a recently-constructed stretch from there to the middle of Kendleton is now effectively completed and is now seamless. About ten additional miles. Once the Federal Highway Administration gets through dotting the i's and inspecting every inch, the new I-69 signage can go in as well. When I go back down in November, I won't guarantee that they'll have them all in that quickly, but you never know. Likely, there's a chance I may check on it.

In addition, I trudged further down to El Campo to check on the eastern half of the old U.S. 59 bypass being upgraded to a freeway. Guess what? It's done. Now, all of U.S. 59 through El Campo is at interstate standards. We'll need to wait a while for new stretches of I-69 to come into place through Hungerford, Wharton, and Pierce to get it to connect to said segment, thus making it eligible for official designation to interstate status.

Progress. Gotta love it.

On a side note, and it's far from official: Look for the first-ever Buc-ee's on I-69 to be in Wharton, TX. It's open now, but the road next to it is still U.S. 59 and not yet reconstructed. By the time construction on the segments leading down to it, as well as the one through Wharton, is completed and, thus, signed, that's when we'll make it official.

Nothing new on the southwest segment. Your writer was just down there, and the freeway is legit. It's possible officials might be waiting until the first of the year for the actual signing.
