Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Just "Disching" Things Up In Austin For College Baseball

Posted 03-19-2023 at 08:33 PM by case44

It became time to hit the road again, albeit briefly. Your writer had to go scratch a college baseball itch, and so it was time to get back to good ol' Disch-Falk Field.

In fact, no matter how the Texas Longhorns are faring this year (as opposed to the great squad they had last year), it seems like I'm just a good luck charm for UT. To point, I can't remember the last time the Longhorns lost with me in attendance at a game in Austin. As it is, I'm just glad to have been at the game after taking an early-morning trip just to get down there. Horns won today, too, 9-3 over the University of New Orleans. Funny thing was, the game was supposed sold out. That's what the Horns' website was telling me when I got my ticket from StubHub, but as I got to the park, to my amazement, there were a lot of empty seats. No joke (and this boy ain't lyin', not like someone else you know ). At least, as uncrowded as it was at The Disch, I could move around a little bit and get different perspectives of the game at hand, so long as I was under the overhead awning. That thing is a blessing.

Your favorite blogger will be headed back to Austin again in April, and this time, it's a conference game and a big one. How about the Oklahoma Sooners? That's who it will be, so there's really no reason that Disch-Falk Field can't be filled up for it. I still plan on going.

Kind of a side note here, but after the game, I stopped at Jim's up in north Austin and had dinner there. For dessert, I think I had the chewiest vanilla ice cream I think I've ever had.

Now, it really wasn't bad, but just unusual.

Does Disch-Falk still have AstroTurf, or did they change to grass?

    This game was…something:

    Texas Tech 20, TCU 16

No, it didn’t take place at Jones AT&T Stadium. It was tonight’s baseball score at Rip Griffin Park in Lubbock, a few hundred feet away.

The teams combined for 36 runs, 33 hits, and 7 errors. Tech scored nine runs in the seventh to go up by three, and never trailed again.

The same two teams met in the College World Series in 2014 (I think), and the defense & pitching for both were nearly flawless both times they met (TCU won both 1-0 if I recall correctly). Times change, of course.

Weather was a factor tonight, but nonetheless was a very weird game.
