my dog bit me

My 1 year old italian mastiff bit me in the face he was next to the garbage where he seemed to be guarding the chicken wrapping i did not realize this and i kissed him like i always do i reached done and kissed him he jumped at me growled and bit me in the face broke the skin but it is minor bit like his teeth grazed me i dont understand why

Dogs are tempermental. He may have been guarding his 'food' or a bountiful harvest for him, (the garbage and those bones!).
He may have been protecting his territory, as he thought you were trying to steal his food! (I never trust a dog that I cant reach down and take his food away from him/her with out them snapping...if you cant do that, then the dog isnt going to get any better at this as they grow up. Its time to replace the dog!).
Learn from this and never approach him when there is food around, and think about getting a friendlier or more gentled dog in the future.
