User submitted facts and corrections:
  • The town of Alma illinois was est ablished in the second half of the 1800\'s, with land donated by 5 prominen4t citizens, including W.S.Ross and 4 others who were wealthy land owners and growers/ merchants in the area. A college was built on land also donated by these men, and was at first a christian college, but was later donated to the town for a grammar and high school. The original two story building was later torn down and replaced with a one story, more modern building, which still stands but is vacant at this time. There is presently a post office, but no stores or gas stations in operation. The Alma cemetery lies at the south end of town, and holds the graves of the founders and many of their decendants. One of the oldest citizens is Mary WEeks, a retired school teacher and relative of W.s.ross, who at this writing os more than 95 years old and still active, driving her own car. Most of the homes still existing are turnofthecentury or older, with a scattering of newer construction. Some old buildings still stand on the old main street, though the majority have fallen to age and deterioration. (The old bank building has been torn down and the area used as a small park, with the original vault still standing on it\'s foundation. My grandfather, Louis Ernst Muehlhausen and Grandma ada lived in alma for many years, as did my father and his brothers and sister. my father and mother returned to alma upon his retirement and lived there for many years before his death. we have many fond memories of alma and the surrounding countryside.
