On October 2, 1962, Hospital Corpsman Second Class Gerald Owen Norton, of Moulton, Iowa became the first U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman of 692 to be killed in Vietnam. He died in a helicopter crash while supporting a combat mission. He was 23 years old and single at the time of his death.
