User submitted facts and corrections:
  • Napoleon, Missouri was first platted in 1836 but didn't really grow or do anything and basically collapsed into oblivion until a Dr. Belt from Wellington became interested in the land and reviving the town. He had no real landmarks to go by so started a new town in the approximate same place as the old town of Napoleon was. The new town was named Lisbon. The new town was platted in 1856 and flourished. There are numerous reasons that the town now flourished but didn't 20 years earlier. By 1887, Lisbon incorporated but because of something to do with the Post Office name being Napoleon it was decided to rename the town to Napoleon. Now we have a town by the name of Napoleon with the plat of Lisbon. The original 1836 plat of Napoleon was quite different and considerably larger than the later 1856 plat of Lisbon/Napoleon. There are many stories of Napoleon during its infancy and it growing up. We still have one business left that was active in Napoleon in the mid to late 1800's. It is the Clay Farmers Mutual Insurance Co.. Just recently the G & S store closed after approximately 113 years of continous operation. Prior to that the Napoleon Elevator closed its doors about 3 or 4 years ago after its continous operation from the early 1900's and it was a later version of the Napoleon Mill on the same property that was in business from back in the mid to late 1800's. I can find most the exact dates if anyone it interested. The main business left in Napoleon now is the U.S. Post Office and the Napoleon Bank. The Napoleon bank was started in 1902 and has grown steadily since then. The Napoleon Post Office dates back far before that but I can't put an exact date on it establishment but it was in the mid 1800's from materials I have found. We have another business yet in Napoleon. It is "Ma & Pa's Antique Mall". They handle only true antiques and many old articles from Napoleon itself. We have had books written on the town, 3 to be exact. Each about 400 pages with about 50% pictures and 50% written material. Not to be forgotten is the Army Corps or Engineers located on the east side of town. Date of origin right now it unknown but could easily be found. There are still two churches in Napoleon, the Napoleon United Methodist Church and the St. Paul United Church of Christ. Farming has been a mainstay of the community all the years and still is a supporting factor. Napoleon has had hotels, Dr's, pharmacies, barbers, farming, eggs & chickens, beef, milk, seamstrist, livery stables, saw mills, slaughter houses, dry goods dealers, railroad services, River boat services, grain mill, grain elevator, bank, town paper, telephone company, insurance company, trucking company, Corp of Engineers, River Fishermen and Fisheries, Creamery, Gas Service Stations, resturaunts, 10 year school system, 3 or 4 churches through the years, coffin makers, shoe repair shops, tin shops, blacksmith shops, and many more. The increase in communications, and transportation in respect to the proximaty of the larger cities of Independance, Kansas City, and Blue Spring drew the patrons away from the local businesses and slowly one by one, the businesses have shut down leaving a calm country living atmosphere with few businesses operating in its borders. Maybe some day some businesses will realize the opportunity they are missing by not establishing their business in Napoleon. Western Lafayette County it growing rapidly and Napoleon it at the far northwest edge, on U.S. 24 Hwy. I heard one old timer say, "Funny, you see people move in Napoleon and never leave since they like it so much." The age range of the residents of Napoleon is from the young in their early 20's starting their families here to the seniors living their lives out here. You will find all age groups here. Napoleon is an old German heritage community where the German atmosphere and values are still much of the norm. German was still spoken as late as in the 1940's here by several of the old timers at that time.
