User submitted facts and corrections:
  • Saltville is one of the most historic places in Virginia. New research indicates the Spanish visited very large native American villages here before Jamestown was settled by the English. Several Civil War battles were fought over the salt works, and the town was used to illustrate post industrial America. There was an industry here that polluted so much it was closed because of environmental concerns. The Museum of the Middle Appalachians showcases this history. Nature is at a premium here. Hunting, fishing, hiking, and boating are all close by. If you love the outdoors this is your place. One of the newest natural areas in Virginia, the Red Rocks, has spectacular views of the highest mountains in the commonweatlth. The Virginia birding trail has a Clinch Mountain Loop. When you combine one of the most scenic places in Virginia, with one of the most historic, and throw in a liberal dose of friendliness, it makes a great place to live.
