During a disaster FEMA provides much needed financial assistance and ensures that fresh water, food, shelter and communications are available in the flood stricken area. After the 1993 midwest floods a total of 534 counties in nine states were declared for federal disaster aid. As a result 168,340 people registered for federal assistance.
