Default The virus is present worldwide.

Worldwide emergence of multiple clades of enterovirus 68

"Phylogenetic analysis of all EV-D68 sequences indicates that, over the past two decades, multiple clades of the virus have emerged and spread rapidly worldwide. All clades appear to be currently circulating and contributing to respiratory disease."

"In the USA, we documented the EV-D68 cluster in NYC in 2009, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported EV-D68 clusters in several states in 2010 (CDC, 2011; Tokarz et al., 2011)."

The virus is everywhere. It mostly causes what we usually know as a "cold", most commonly in summer.

Since most of the illnesses are mild, viral testing is not done, and they do not get reported. It is not a condition for which reporting is mandated.

However, since there are now tests which can check for a multitude of viruses at one time, including enteroviruses like EV-D68, it will get identified more frequently than in the past.

The virus has not been imported by immigrants. It was already here. The question is why are the illnesses this year more serious. That may be due to mutation in the virus, unfortunately.

I can find no news reports of outbreaks of the illness in the children who have recently crossed our borders. The articles you are seeing are just repeating the same speculation seen here.
