I actually was allowed to interview some of these folks in the place near Clayton. I was working on a federal project and was sent there. Surprisingly, they let me in. The leader stayed pretty far away from me while I was there but he certainly knew every thing that was going on. They told me they moved there to be able to freely home school their children. I cannot recall where they moved from but whereever it was, they actually demanded that the kids be taught something. New Mexico apparently does not have such restrictions. Basically, the ones I spoke to were all illiterate, adults and children alike. But then they had a few adults who were very bright and left very good careers in California to live out there. It was a real interesting mixture of people.
I will say that they were very nice to me and they certainly did not have to cooperate on this project but they did. It was quite an experience actually.
