I'm not trying to bash anyone in particular here, but I've noticed that a lot of the older posters on this forum tend to post smug, condescending responses to the younger posters on here. I think it's annoying and frustrating, especially when you're trying to seek advice. It's one thing to have your own opinion, but to throw subtle insults and demeaning comments at you is uncalled for (referring to someone as whiny, telling someone to grow up, talking down to the poster, etc.). It also tends to derail a thread that could help the OP and others. This is becoming much more prominent from certain posters on here and I'm finding C-D to be less and less accommodating and hospitable because of it.

I've visited other forums, and I've never seen such a disgusting display of disrespect between the older and younger posters. This is just a comment about what I've noticed about your forum. I'm sorry if you don't agree, but I've found it be a prominent, recurring issue on here. Will the mods respond to these subtle insults or condescending posts, or does it have to be a blatant offense (cursing, name-calling, harassment) in order for the culprit to be dealt with?

Thank you.

If you think a post like you describe is discussing the poster rather than the topic, click the report button so the mod for the forum can look at it. It doesn't have to include inappropriate language to be reportable.

That applies whether or not it is an older poster vs. younger poster situation.

Smugness and condescension are attitudes, not specific violations of the TOS per se, it seems to me, unless they cross the line into personal attacks and insults, and that difficult-to-define-line is what the moderators have to deal with. Of course those attitudes are not very endearing, but maybe the OP should try to be less sensitive to tone, as the anonymous nature of a public forum tends to lead to wide-ranging and spirited debate, which I think is one of its great strengths.

Although we often cannot know the age of our fellow posters here, we do sometimes know it; my experience has been that both young and old can be smug and condescending. I suppose that can differ depending on what forums we frequent, so I cannot claim that the OP's conclusion (as to the typical age of the wielders of objectionable tone) is inaccurate, only that it differs from mine.

I find this especially rampant in the Work and Employment forum which is why I have several older posters on ignore. The women are the worst, but I can't paint them all with the same brush of course. Unfortunately I tried giving some a second chance by replying to some of their "normal" replies, just to be sucked in and insulted with their follow ups. Case in point, my current working thread where I'm being told to man up while clearly being the victim of an uncaring workplace bully. I was even told to grow a thicker skin by a mod when someone on my ignore list harassed me via reputation comments and I asked them to stop, asking a mod to intervene.
I used to be a member of a no holds barred forum and was led to believe that the TOS was strictly enforced here, but I find that not to be the case as sometimes reported posts with clear violations seem to be ignored. It's as if the board vets have the green light to behave badly just because of their "seniority". What doesn't help is that members are forbidden to call others out on their trolling and that can actually be seen as a violation in itself.

As you age, you gain experience.

Sometimes, when answering a post, it sounds preachy, or smug, where in reality, it's based on experience.

Nobody likes to hear advise that goes against their preconceived feelings.

It happens with me and my kids. They ask for advise and then get pissed when they don't get the answer they were hoping for. Then it turns into an argument.

Don't worry.

We know what's best for you!

Come on!!!!!
It's the INTERNET!
You started a thread cause you got your feeling hurt by people you have never met and never will meet?
How old are you anyway?
Man up... or move on!

I'm curious if you have also noticed any younger posters having attitudes towards older posters.

None of your post makes sense. I started a post cause I got my feeling hurt....huh?!?! Maybe you mean I started a post AND my feelings got hurt. Ugh....That's why I lose faith in the older generations. Can you at least make sense when you post, and maybe then I'll agree that you know something I don't? If you're going to tell me to man up, at least do so in a comprehensible way.

If so, it's usually due to a response from an older poster. Sometimes younger posters can post some stupid, immature comments. I agree to an extent. But some of us really would like useful advice and not a bunch of smug responses. See StaggerLee2above. He's 'bout to be reported!

The Work and Employment subforum is the absolute worst (and yet perfect) example of this.

I find that if you report something you find offensive, the mods are responsive towards it for the most part. But I do agree that the older posters tend to gang up on people rather than offer a kind rebuttal to your belief/opinion. They'll often make remarks such as "you're whiny" or "grow up" rather than something productive towards the topic. When you tell someone they are something negative, it's common sense that that will have ill-effect on said individual. If older posters are so wise, why can't they understand this simple concept?

I never said you weren't.

But being "smart" cannot compensate for experience.
