In this day & age you can't be too careful.
That's my opinion.
So how much personal information is too much?

It depends on the specifics of what you're doing. If you're on a board that you're embarrassed to be on, devoted to some sort of underground fetish or seeking information on an embarrassing medical problem or seeking relationship advice or something of the like, then I wouldn't disclose anything about myself. Sites like this are less risky, but still, I'm careful with what information I put online. Everything that you put on the internet is public domain so you have to be careful about what you say as well as it could come back to bite you in the future. I never use the same user name twice, do not reveal my real name, any information about my family, and am generally vague about my age, education and whereabouts (exception for this board on my whereabouts). It may be paranoid but the internet is trolling with freaks and it's better safe than sorry.

Lightbulb Paranoid is good

When it comes to your personal safety & your kids, I feel being a little paranoid is good. I agree, there are alot of nutjobs out there. You really don't know who is who on the internet.
When it comes to really personal stuff, I keep it to myself. Same goes for my name & the names of my children & my profession & my relationships. My real name, my real town, my real profession, I feel that is personal. I would never post photos of myself, my vehicle, my location. Keep yourself safe.

IMO based on a professional & safety standpoint, I am surprised to read some of the postings on this forum. Way too much is being given out. Are we all teaching our children the dangers of giving away too much personal information? Remember the Specials on MSNBC?

I admit to fibbing quite alot on forums when it comes to where I live. I will usually answer somewhere on the other side of town from where I actually live.
So if someone is trying to find me, good luck with that!

Well, I'd never post pics on the 'net of anyone but myself. I don't think I have any right to put up photos of people that don't specifically want them there. That's why my daughter's pic isn't online, as much as I'd like to show her off.

On different places I put up different information, but I always use a different screen name so there isn't too much info about me in any one place. I DO have a personal website with my name, age and picture, but I don't even mention that I HAVE a daughter on there. It's not exactly super secret stuff- I mean I leave the house, so it's not like people can't find out what I look like. And it's not like my name + picture isn't in my high school yearbook, anyway. I don't say where I live, though.

Heck, my page is so low in the rankings you'd have to know who I am to find it anyway. Of course, that IS my target audience.

On this site, I don't say much that I'd care if everyone knew. I'm not to worried about someone who knows me recognizing me. That's why I'm ok with saying I live in Anchorage.

One of the main reasons I keep things separate, is that I have very strong opinions about certain things, and don't exactly want to advertise to the world that hey, "CandyApple thinks anyone who thinks ____ is completely full of it!" Arguing with strangers is one thing, but I like to keep things peacable with my friends.

Wink Agree

I agree w/ you CandyApple & Pink. Fibbing is necessary, also flat out lying is acceptable too. LOL !!

I'm sure many more folks have done it here & just don't want to admit it. But that's ok...

I too have a strong opinion on certain subjects, but I'll be careful to hold my tongue- lest I Pee off the wrong nasty dude. I have caught myself typing up a frenzy post late at night (half asleep) then just before I hit the "send" I stopped and rethought the post. Thank goodness !

It's a fine line we all need to dance upon when voicing our opinions or discussing our personal lives. Just be careful, that's all I'm saying.

While I think that there is a limit, let's not kid ourselves into thinking any of us are that important that anyone even gives a rat's behind about anyone else on these forums.

Beyond saying "I have diamonds in my desk", or posting nude pictures of oneself, I don't think there is much anyone can say or do that would increase anyone's risk.

Certain websites like myspace are risky because people post intimate things about themselves which might create a fetish. We are talking about a matter of degrees since many of these personal websites are like porno sites. Have you been on myspace lately? There's not much you can do here to get people excited.

Granted, it is a bit odd to post personal details on this forum... I'll give you that.

The most common cause of crime is from people you already know and have possibly invited into your own house. Just don't make friends, don't answer the door, and don't talk to the neighbors...

I keep my name and place of employment private in most places. there is only one obscure messageboard (no I'm not stating which one it is and my username there is completely different) where I know lots of people personally and a private blog amongst friends in which I post rather dull pictures. I have no problem though stating the city I live in, but only because 3 million other people live here too, good luck finding me

My activities online follow the general creed -- if my boss read this, would i still have a job

If you're saying to yourself "I wonder if I should post this?", it's too much.
