City--data has been 'Slow' all week
Could be Comcast, could be Windows or could be on your end at any rate the forum has been loading more slowly all week.
If you can do anything ---I'd appreciate it.
This is what we were 'Asked' to do in other forusm. Just a heads up--not a complaint.

The Dell has this capacity--supposed to do it automatically.
Grrr--I am living with my MOTHER she knows how to work on the 'puter--so furious with her for the trouble she has caused me this week that I don't know if it is worth it to ask.
Do you know anything about defragment of a Dell--running a 200? Version of MS Windows/she's got too much on it --if I have learned anything technical at all.
Not worth the hysteria I can assure you.
I can shut everything down and just wait. LOL--It seems to me that starting mid summer 'Technical' things start having problems. The planet 'Mercury'???
Maybe.
Born in September and I am familiar with Mercury's ways--troublemaker that he is when it comes to 'Communication'.
Judie/at Lallybroch could tell you how this is--what she went through with her board every summer. Voy is still loading 'very, very slowly'--so I don't go over there anymore.
Whatever--'Nellie McKay' that I am--soon I will be singing 'Get Away From Me'/I'm just walking my dog.
That is where I am headed now--to the dog park.

If you want to determine which end of the connection to City-Data is slow, run a traceroute. If you don't know how to run one from your computer, you can do it in your browser at a site like davespeed traceroute.
Just enter the domain name (city-data.com) into that site and wait for the results. What you're looking for is high numbers at the right end of each line. The highest numbers are the point in the connection which is slowest. The closer those high number connections are to the top of the list, the closer they are to the web site running the traceroute (or your computer if you're running it locally). The closer those high numbers are to the bottom of the list, the closer they are to city-data's server.
The drawback to running it in the browser is that it won't directly confirm a problem at your end of the connection, it'll just confirm or disprove one at city-data's end.
If you run the traceroute and don't understand the results, just copy and paste them here. Someone will walk you through them.

Thanks, Bowie.
--I asked 'Mom' to defrag the system.
--Called Comcast and they fixed the 'ping' problem on their end.
--We 'think' that this Dell running Windows XP?5.1, Outlook Express, Avg Safety program and Adobe Photoshop and others needs more memory.
--Cannot tell you how much memory it has--this 'Her' computer and any discussions of what she puts on their result in heated arguments. I can contact her minister who knows 'stuff' like this and have him to talk to her.
What can I say--we are 'Dysfunctional'. My brother just died and she is not dealing with that well among other longstanding issues.
--When I get my own computer I want a laptop that can do the basic sort of things--maybe a Mac--maybe a Dell. When I get to that point, Bowie, would you be able to advise me?
Not overly fond of technology but I need it. LOL. Like politics and religion and bureaucracy--necessary evils, jmo.
<ducking and running like the wind>
Josh wants to go 'Play' and so do I, Josh is a lhasa apso--very 'Demanding'/Alpha male. Also cooking as we speak and I do appreciate the geeky advice.
Later Gators.

On our end we haven't seen any signs of trouble. Our server load has been stable and the bandwidth use remained normal.

Thank you, Admin--althought that is 'Geek' to me.
I think 'Mom' needs to add more memory. Comcast fixed their problem--that is really all I care about.
I can get into IE faster--not as fast as they say it could be--'Something something--running on high speed DSL' said the recording.
It has been faster--before Adobe Photoshop was added.
I guess it would be good to know a bit of technical FYI--I know that some smaller boards run on Envision which works well enough for them. Hannity runs his on 'The Wind' I guess--fastest loading boards with heavy graphics that I have found. LOL--Not doing any further political debates this time around so no need to visit Sean Hannity.
The Ulster-Scots Online people seem to have a 'php'/code problem, if anyone wants to know. Figured out a way to contact them. If a new poster cannot log on--and I don't seem to be in the database--but I have a home page and clearly I am in some file--then the user cannot contact a moderator or the Administrator.
That has never happened to me at City-data--Thanking my Higher Power.
Hope Ulster Scots Online can find out what has happened.
While you, Admin are here--someone, MB2/Moderator--should be contacting you to ask if we can have a 'Food and Fun' thread/posted sticky in the Atlanta forum. We have been answering the same questions for several years and I really believe someone should create/design an Atlanta website(s) with all this FYI. That person cannot be me. I can make a blog on prepackaged software but there are some in the Atlanta forum that design websites professionally. I think someone like that should use the thousands of threads recommending places to eat, drink and places to see in every part of Atlanta to make a City-Data website.
I know Scranton-Wilkes Barr/PA could probably advise on how to do this.

That means nothing to me. I have a Dell, I have Comcast and Windows XP 5.1--the computer runs.
It has too many programs on it --I am certain of that.
With Divine Intervention maybe my Mother will consent to add more memory.
This is her computer and there are 'intense moments' about what should/could be done with the computer.
Come over to my house and talk some sense into her if you would like.
Until then I will 'Live' with the leisurely pace at which the system loads.
Not happily --but so much better than what I started out with.
Working up the nerve to try to buy a laptop. ???Wifi??? means nothing to me but I think that is what I really need.
Any suggestions?
