Is it ok to post copyright material when you are the owner of the copyright? Are there any special steps that need to be taken in a situation like this?

Years ago I wrote and published a book on local ghost stories. It's long since gone out of print. I thought it would be fun to post one or two of the shorter stories in my town's forum. IMO our forum needs something light and fun right about now, and there's nothing like telling a ghost story to perk up a hot summer night.

Would that be ok? I could file a written permission with our mod if you'd like. Also, I'm guessing you wouldn't want me to give the title of the book so that this won't come across as some sort of sales pitch. But just an excerpt should be ok, right?

I'm not a lawyer, but if you refer back to the Terms of Service:

By registering and posting on City-Data.com's Forums you grant owners of City-data.com forum a perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive right to license, use, modify, or publish your posts in any media and manner whatsoever.

In this layperson's interpretation, that means once you post something here, it no longer belongs exclusively to you.

It only means that we'd be free to republish it but we wouldn't have the copyright, Dark of the Moon.

And normie, if this is a book that was in print, I don't think we'd have a problem with it. Not in the state forum, though, where it'd be off topic. You're welcome to share your story in the Entertainment forum for example. Or use your blog here to make it a series.

It might be a problem if it was something previously published on the Internet, though. We ask our members to only post original content or link to the material hosted elsewhere.

None of these stories have been on the internet (at least as far as I know), but a few of the stories have been read on local tv shows. Is that ok?

I actually have no problem with CD being able to republish any of the ghost stories as long as I would also have the right to republish. That's what I was wondering. I'm not especially worried about "protecting" them, I guess because they weren't my personal stories or my personal creative efforts, just putting local ghost stories down on paper. Also, anyone who wants to use them will find out (like I did) that there isn't much money to be made from ghost stories. I suppose someone might read them and try to "borrow" them but they's have a hard time publishing them anyway because they wouldn't know my sources.

Maybe the best idea would be to rewrite them a little--making them shorter would probably be a good idea anyway. Thanks marka, I'm going to think about this for a few more days but I think I'll try posting one of the stories and see how it goes over.
