TED Talk about the Tragedy of Orphanages is very important to those of us interested in international adoption. While this TED Talk doesn't specifically talk about adoption, most internationally available children have spent some time in institutionalized care before they come to us and we need to know how these children lived. I agree that more support should be given to struggling families so that so many children aren't abandoned to orphanages.
And some kids who have been institutionalized won't be adopted and also need extensive therapy - emotional, physical or both. Many lived in terrible conditions before being put into the orphanage and many were abandoned at birth, especially those with physical problems.
There should be some focus on helping the kids who will remain in those institutions. Improving the orphanges would help both those who will never leave them and also those who will end up adopted because they would have fewer problems from living in the orphanage itself.
Thanks so much for posting this link - the speaker makes her case simply, effectively, and convincingly. This should be must viewing for all who are concerned with the plight of the children in the orphanages and institutions of eastern Europe.
