Wonder why they don't just go ahead and call them Foster Parents ? Cause that is what they are doing.

I'm thinking it's because they are volunteers and not being paid.

Well most foster parents don't get paid either!

In fact it can be quite expensive being a foster parent in some states. I know there are some states where women in particular can earn a good living taking in foster kids and that doesn't always work out so well. i remember in Georgia I met a woman from NYC who was all eager to sign up to be a foster parent "To help make ends meet". She was shocked to learn there was no money in it. absolutely shocked ."Why would anybody do that if there wasn't pay involved?" she lamented. Not the kind of foster parent who would be my preference.

As one who's worked in adoptions, I can tell you that whoever started the ad on TV about volunteers needed to "hold babies" is misinformed. U.S. Adoption Agencies place infants directly form the hospital, so no one holds the babies except their adoptive family. And orphanages in the U.S. were phased out many years ago. Perhaps in international adoptions, there is a need for volunteers. And certainly hospitals need volunteers to work in the nurseries. But adoption agencies do not house children. This ad has cause great concern for us because our phones have been flooded with inquiries, taking our time away from the mothers who need our help, and agencies who have certain types of online advertising are having to pay for each click on their website asking about how to "hold a baby". Again, if someone wants to volunteer helping an infant or child, please go where they are really needed: Hospitals, Child Protective Services, overseas orphanages, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, local homeless shelters, or the March of Dimes. Thank you.
