I know a lot of South Africans who have moved to the United States. All of them have told me it's not what it used to be. They said it's become overrun with violence and reverse racism that it's not a safe place to live if you're White unless you can afford to live in a good area with proper security protection. They have all told me it's still a beautiful country, but it's no longer enjoyable to live there. I have friends from Johannesburg, Durban and Capetown. I'd still love to visit though.
Ive met loads of (mostly white) south africans hear and in London, and the overall picture they give is they were very happy to get out.
A good friend of mine's father is a South African based executive with food giant cadbury schweeps. Her tales of constantly having body guards and military style security systems are not something i want to live with every day thats for sure.

I would love to live in Cape Town (or South Africa, generally speaking), for a while at least. I know the risks, but if I really wanted to be safe I'd never leave my house (and then again, not even my house is a totally safe place anyway). Even though I'm a real coward , I just think that some places are worth the trouble.
I think the crime there is overrated. I know many South Africans who have not experienced much crime, and they tell me that as long as you have common sense and protect yourself, you should be safe in most cities. Obviously crime is a problem, however everyone experiences it differently and some not at all. Most of the criminals there usually target the rich areas such as Sandton, and Gauteng accounts for most of South Africa's crime problem.
I'm sure it's a great place to visit, but all those South Africans living in London must have had good reasons to give up the great weather and big open spaces and outdoor lifestyle etc.
It was a nazi state, and it shows a lot of the marks still, so I'm told. My brother was scared stiff in certain areas, and it is evidently grossly sexist. On the other hand, there are real forces making for change there, which is unlike our situation here in the Thatcherite UK, where the chimney-climbing-boys and workhouse REFORMS are doubtless being unthinkably thought out in the unthinkable thinktanks, together with the EATGRASS Development.
