Africa is a vast continent, so to think that there is only one standard is just silly. I simply want to know the standards that African men and women hold has ideal when it comes to beauty. There have been a number of threads about bleaching, and Western influence of beauty in Africa. I would like this thread to be about the beauty of African women and men that has nothing to do with Europe, Caucasian, or Western influence. I don't want to discuss that at all. This is about African standards of beauty, pure and simple. If you cannot maintain the topic of this thread, please do not post. If you feel the need to hijack this thread, please find another one to do that in. I would like to keep this thread positive. There are enough negative forums, threads, websites about African people, on the Continent, and in the Diaspora to last us a thousand lifetimes. Please do not add this to it. Thanks.

Afirca is too broad. Too many countries with too many tribes.
Maybe ask about region, like "What is the standard of beauty in West Africa?

I think this question would be better fitting on a predominately African populated forum don't you? Most people here have a fondness for the continent but are not from there, so you may get few answers that you value. Certainly as there are a number of countries on the continent, one could expect varying answers based on the location.

According to all my nigerian friends, Nigerian men like thick, dark skinned women.

Soukous Radio in Kinshasa depicts a rotating series of pictures on their portal, which I presume represents what they think are beauties. Go here and keep clicking Refresh, to see them.

Soukous African Radio

Live stream their music, too, it's great.

Thanks for answering the question. This appears to be one standard. Are there others? For instance, how are slim women viewed in Nigeria? Also, what about the standard of height for men? Are taller African men considered more attractive than shorter African men?

This is precisely why the Continent would have multiple of standards of beauty. I think it would be an interesting discussion to mention various regions on the Continent, versus just one.

The varying answers is exactly what I am interested in. I think this forum is perfect to discuss this topic on City Data, as it was created to discuss Africa.

Traditionally Akan men prefer dark, well-rounded (fat) women.
Akan women prefer tall, muscular, dark men.

This sounds like the standard I heard about Mauritanian men. A few years ago I was at an international event with some friends from Rwanda; people from various countries were called out in front of everyone. Two men from Mauritania stood up and the first thing my friend said was, "ah they're from Mauritania--they like big women. Oprah is their dream woman!"
