I have to thank you for that. There's alot on that plate! But I'm game! As far as my understanding of the country I kind of enter it through history, i.e really studying and learning about the Anglo-Zulu war. It's a great piece of history that I've discovered. Andl we know what that was all about! The Zulus fighting for their country.

And I'd like to say that I was told to bring 'sweets' if I venture into Kwa-Zulu country. True? And does your post hold in that area? Thanks!

I'm not sure! I haven't been out of Western Cape yet, so I don't know any more than what I've heard. I'm planning an extended trip to Bloukrans, Port Elizabeth, Durban, Pretoria, Joburg, and Pilanesberg in two weeks.

I know that I hear over and over that Cape Town basically feels like a different country from the rest of South Africa. The coloured population is tiny outside Western Cape and the black population is way way bigger. Of course, Americans could probably just as fairly say that Miami, Phoenix, and Boston all feel like different countries.

Afrikaners mainly carry South African passports and that's it. People with English ties have at least two passports. England was also the colonial ruler of record, not the dutch. White Afrikaners who do not hold EU passports are subject to the same outlandish visa procedures (of other countries) as other South Africans. South Africa is the only country in Africa where there are substantial numbers of relatively poor whites, nearly all of them Afrikaners.

All my white friends and business associates are Afrikaners and white culture is decidedly Afrikaans.
