ZAMBIA - seems to be one of the safer, and unknown countries in Africa...what do you know about ZAMBIA?

For me, I know Livingstone is there, which is a little backpacker and tourist haven for nearby Victoria Falls. Apparently the Zimbabwe side traditionally was better and had better tourist infrastructure, but with all that happened with Zimbabwe, the Zambia side has really been thriving, developing and changing very positively to accomodate the tourists.

I've also heard that Lusaka is one of the more laid-back, and more relaxing capitals on the region.

How about you? What all do you know about Zambia? Good and/or bad?

The need for Africans to have a black president is very overrated especially when you consider the mess black presidents have made around the continent after colonialism.

Interesting. A lot of Africa seems to be picking up economically.

My recollections of the country are all from a long time ago- I grew up in what was then Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe.

At that time my impression was that the economy was based largely on mining in the copper belt round Kitwe, and agriculture. The country had a smaller population and less-developed economy, with no major tourist attractions beyond Victoria Falls- no game reserves like Kruger in South Africa, no beautiful lake like Lake Nyasa in Malawi, no mountains like Inyanga in Zimbabwe.
I remember when I was quite young hearing of Dag Hammarsjold of the United Nations being killed in a plane crash under suspicious circumstances, and much later tourists on the Rhodesian side of Vic Falls coming under mortar attack from Zambia- not a positive impression of the country.

I had friends in school from Blantyre and Kitwe so part of my perception of the country is based on them finding Salisbury (Harare) a much more exciting place.

Whether any of this is still relevant to you I don't know!
