came from on the African continent" -- in fact -- that widely-held YET
FALSE conception actually has NOTHING to do with how or why the*
term created or applied to that specific ETHNIC grouping of people.
.
The TERM of 'African-American' (AA) was created in order*
to express BOTH the 'geo-historical VOYAGE' as well as*
the 'geo-historical EXPERIENCE' that their ancestors had*
SURVIVED ("from-AFRICA-to-AMERICA") which led to the*
creation of their very unique ETHNIC grouping of people.

The term of 'African-American' (AA) was created to identify and*
applies SOLELY the specific ETHNIC grouping of people who are:

antebellum-era, chattel-slavery system of the continental U.S."--

The 'Black American' (BA) RACE group -- on the other hand*

of the U.S. who are NOT members of the ETHNIC*
group we now refer to by the term of AA.

There are more than 18 million BAs found 'in the U.S.*
alone' (with the numbers increasing annually) AND*
there are less than 13 million AAs even found*
'in existence' (including the expatriates).
.
This is WHY, the term of 'African-American' (AA) does NOT mean*
'Black' -- the term of AA is NOT a synonym for 'Black' -- the term*
of AA should NOT be used interchangeably with 'Black' -- AND*
the term of AA is NOT referring the the 'Black' RACIAL group.

What traits do AA have then? The U.S. is a country made up of various origins, but you have essentially rendedred the African origin of this nation obsolete. Non-existent. Are AA European? Asian? Native American? Also, you would be surprised at how many German orgin folk feel a deep connection to German culture, despite never stepping foot in Europe at all.

Either way, there are some visible aspects, if you pay attention to certain details.

Also, there is a range in terms of how preserved African aspects are by location too.

How do you measure what is African? A lot of African culture has been mixed with and changed by Arabs that had conquered Africa since ancient times and Europeans and Asians and different groups of people that conquered Africa or traded with people on the continent. In addition culture is always changing and evolving. So we have to remember that we'd have to go back before the Arabs ever set foot in Africa with Islam and other religions and cultures and their oppressive slave trade since ancient times to know what African culture was before the Arab conquerers came in.

What is the starting point to what constitutes African-ness or being African and what is the ending point?

In addition the concept of Africa as a unified land mass and united grouping of people had absolutely no meaning.

But how do you say one Afrodiasporic group of people is more African than the other?

Does anyone ever compare the European diaspora and say one is more European than the other? Do ppl ever pontificate on whether or not a Euro U.S. American is more or less "European" (whatever that truly means) than a Euro Latino, or a Euro Caribbean person or a European descendant living in African nations or in Asia? How the **** do you measure? What's the starting point or ending point?

Better yet does one say that Nigerians are more African than Ghanians etc or vice versa than the others or others?

Does one say that a Sephardic Jew from Turkey or Morocco is more Jewish than a Jew from Iran? All express their Jewry or Jewishness in different contexts and different ways

Is an Asian person in the USA not as Asian as someone living in Mexico or the United Kingdom?

How does one measure or say that one is more African than another, then again and let alone to say that that person or these persons are even African at all?

In the case of African Americans, they are not homogenous, as they can differ by region, culture, behaviors, class etc and even history.

There are many groups that express African heritage in different ways.

But in addition the label of African in and of itself is flawed as it was applied to diverse groupings of people and unique individuals who had no unity or concept of adhesion or cohesion but had various cultures and tribes and customs and traditions. IJS. something to consider.

With all of that said, you can find links between African Americans and some West African cultures.

You can find links. You can also find differences. The cultures of both people are different. Same with Melanesians (though we didn't come from there).

I hate that we let Messy Jackson add "African" to our American identity. we don't need to be African: we are a great nation within a nation that needs to realize ourselves as distinct from other "black" groups in just about every way.

we have a lot of issues today but nevertheless have MUCH to be proud of! peace.

the people of the Sea Islands in the Carolinas have culture that links hem to different African tribes. yet, they are established as to who they are here in the Americas.

I don't understand especially African people: I have heard the ones that bulk at the idea of us being linked to African in anyway and I have run into those who insist we are African.

I think it best if let a people decide how they want to identify and just worry about yourselves who are becoming more and more assimilated into American cultural socialization. in a few decades, Africans on the continent will be wondering who the hell YOU are!
