THE middle-aged women chatting and sipping cocktails on a sunshine holiday feel they’ve picked the perfect spot for a break.

For The Gambia — a country known as the Smiling Coast of Africa — fits the bill for just what they are seeking.
And that, put simply, is love. The smiling, obliging and charming Africans give them the kind of attention that some of them may not have enjoyed for years.
Many of these unlucky-in-love women want to return home from their two-week break with a tan, a smile — and a new lover in tow who can give them the affection they have craved for years.
The young men, some of them teenagers, target the white women. Marriage to a “toubab” — a white foreigner — is their goal. They see them as their ticket to a new life in a country with endless opportunities.
In a country where half the population live below the poverty line and the average wage is £30 a week, a European girlfriend seems to make perfect sense

Very surprising since they can't find suitable males in their own backyard.

Don't they realize they are being used(the women)?
Is this technically prostitution?

I read similar stories a few years ago about women going to Jamaica for the same thing. They may be calling it love, but it sounds more like good old fashioned lust to me.

I don't know how this would be seen as prostitution. These women are probably naive to reality, but smooth talkers with flattery and attention can cloud ones judgement. Sadly, some of them may end up giving their life savings to the guy, as he lies and manipulates with stories and then breaks the woman's heart. The women they showed in the article are hardly good looking for their age. The man will stray and the woman will feel the fool.

Being that the article is in The Sun which is a lying rag, I doubt that's it factual.

Why is it OK for men to travel abroad to look for romance (or a spouse), but not for women to do the same? Why is it OK for Russian women to seek spouses abroad, but not British?

Your sane line of reasoning is interfering with the level of ignorance in this thread. Please stop it.

Are the men "using" these women? Probably. However, the way these women are using these men's situation to their advantage is as equally exploitative imo. I don't think most relationships where both parties are together because of their own "dire" situations will end well.

I know white women go to Africa for sex. I don’t know how many actually get married.

Many African men genuinely prefer larger, and sometimes older, women—the sort of women that wouldn’t get noticed back home where men prize youth and slimness.

The white women enjoy the stereotypical endowments of African men. I have white male friends in the expat community in Tanzania and they say it’s hard to hook up with white women because they all want black men.
