The U.S. military secretly deployed a small number of trainers and advisers to Somalia in October, the first time regular troops have been stationed in the war-ravaged country since 1993, when two helicopters were shot down and 18 Americans killed in the “Black Hawk Down” disaster.
Gee. This sure sounds familiar. Has this happened before? And then led up to deeper US involvement in the internal affairs of another country? Read it @ U.S. has deployed military advisers to Somalia, officials say - The Washington Post

I must admit, i'm not sure how this is news...

As far as i'm aware there has been a regular rotation of US forces in Somalia since May/June 2012. Most recently US Rangers with UH-60 and AH-1s for support.

Other NATO forces have shared similar roles over the last 3 years in an attempt to combat the threat of Somali Pirates. Originally purely a naval operation in late 2010 they added a shore contingent to support helicopter and land based counter-pirate operations. It's called Operation Open Shield (UN Resolution 1838/1950) and started in 2009.
Here's a link to a 18 month old report on the US's first major deployment but smaller groups had been involved in training and support roles prior to that date: Link
