Not just Ethiopia but a lot of Roman north Africa. St Augustine, arguably the most influential church father in terms of theology, was African.

Very true, St Augustine who incidently happen to be a Berber (Native of North Africa) was born in Thagast (Souk Ahras today),in Numidia (Algeria today)
