I remember running across a blog or something Abby a guy who guided hunting trips in Africa. His advice to people getting in the business was to know English, German or French (both if possible), Afrikaans if you wanted to work in South Africa, and at least one African language. Most of the guys who own and run these companies are white Africans. Not sure if that counts or not though.

My friend (a white Cherokee) speaks fluent Kiswahili. I've also come across people of European ancestry who speak Twi-Fante.

Yes there are many white South Africans who learned various African languages to be able to communicate with their employees, as well as to keep a handle on what they were up to.

Swahili is pretty easy for a visitor to learn. You can pick up quite a bit of it in a couple of weeks in East Africa. White settler knew it wel, as did shopowners.l.

As indicated above, every white farmer in South Africa learned as a child enough of the Bantu language for general purpose communication with his workers. In Apartheid days,The white children of the landowner played freely with the black children of the workers until they were "old enough" that social acceptance needed to be countermanded.

Many white families have been in South Africa for generations. Perhaps the OP will clarify the question for us. I take it to mean people who have never lived in Africa.
