Is it true that Africans mostly live in thatched hut villages like in National Geographic and movies like The Gods Must Be Crazy and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls? Or is that just a misconception and they actually live in trailers, apartments and houses?

Do most people in Africa watch TV and listen to the radio, even if they live in very remote areas?

Most Africans? No. The situation for most is closer to the trailers/apartments/houses. That said, a sizable minority of Africans do live in mud and thatched hut villages. But these aren't mud/thatched homes that the Average Joe could build; these are large, sturdy structures that serve their purpose fairly well.

The funny thing is that most African airports are in the middle or right outside of city centers, near typical brick/glass/metal city buildings, which is the first thing that western journalists/documentary-makers see when they deplane. Yet, these journalists/documentary-makers wait until they are hours outside of the city center to start filming the "real Africa." Of course, they'll review and put together their films in the city proper, where there is steady electricity, etc.

And most Africans do watch TV, though not every household will have a TV, especially in the more remote areas. Radios are certainly more common where there are no TVs.

I wonder if the people who live in huts are mostly those who are unwilling to live a "modern" life. Sort of like the Amish here.

There are now and have always been mega-cities in Africa. A lot of them, such as Benin, were destroyed by colonialism.

So you're going to ignore Egypt and all of Southern Africa and pretend like those aren't apart of Africa.

Those are just how some Africans live. Not every African lives in a hut on some lush patch of grassland, waiting to spear the nearest animal they can find.

If you want to see some very sturdily build mud huts here in the good old USA, take a trip to Santa Fe. Some of the mud huts there are extremely expensive and are proudly lived in by some fairly wealthy people.

I just wonder how many of your respondents have actually spent any time in Africa...and if they have not, what their opinions are based on.
