Ethiopia was the only country not was not invaded or colonized by European countries. Theorically, it should have had a head start. But modern Ethiopia is not that much better than African countries.

Head start on what?

I think you can look at this in a lot of different ways. Singapore and Hong Kong for example, one could argue that had a much larger 'headstart' due to the fact they had the colonial ties that established certain judicial law, contractual law, and educational precedents, etc.

On the other hand, Philippines would have had that too, and where is it at? Not in any kind of amazing place in that regard.

In short, I think there are many other factors on 'better off' beyond not having had a colonial european power in the rearview mirror.

True. I don't understand why people always claim that Ethiopia was never colonized when Mussolini's Italy famously invaded and took over the country during World War II. This is part of the reason why Eritrea is separate from Ethiopia today, and Eritreans have plenty of Italian influence in their culture, right down to eating a lot of pastas and tomato based sauces with their food. I have an uncle from Eritrea who grew up there when it was still part of Ethiopia and one of the languages he speaks is Italian.

No, but it was for a brief 5 year period during World War II. And many Ethiopians in the north, mostly in what is now present day Eritrea, sided with Italy against the rest of the country. That is part of the history of the division of Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Most Africans and to a certain extent many historians see the scramble for Africa as the main reason of Africa's problems. Since Ethiopia was not colonized for a long time it should not have the same problem as other African countries.

It was a brief period of colonization, but those 5 brief years during World War II caused a lot of problems and division that lasted long after the Italians were defeated and ran out of Ethiopia. Once again, research the history of the division between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Also, after that, the Soviets came in during the Cold War and set the country back through famine, violence, and a ruthless communist dictatorship. Remember the Live Aid concert, and all the stars doing videos like "We Are the World" to help raise money to fight the famine in Ethiopia? Well, that "famine" was actually a ruthless Soviet backed dictatorship where millions of Ethiopians died from hunger and went even further into poverty due to the corrupt government seizing citizens' farmland and causing a massive food shortage in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia's current day situation is a LOT more complicated than just whether or not they were colonized during the Scramble for Africa back in the 1800's.

Welcome. It's also worth noting that even though they failed, the Italians DID also invade Ethiopia and try to colonize it during the late 1800's, in order to get in on the Scramble for Africa. So it goes back even further than just the brief period that Italy colonized Ethiopia during WW II.
