Some say the media exaggerates the level of poverty and dysfunction in order to make Africa look worse off than it is. But there's also evidence to suggest that African countries are really dysfunctional. Which is the real Africa?

Both. There are some pretty stable countries, some stabilizing countries, and some countries that are fairly chaotic. Then you have lots of countries in one overall state with pockets of something else. Overall if you look back a few decades things are trending towards the better.
