And yes society does have a notion of how a thug looks and dresses. Certainly NOT like Theo Huxtable.

I read that there is a new pan-African phenomenon, namely a nasty crop-eating worm that is spreading like wildfire and might cause a huge famine across much of Africa and maybe even beyond

The way blacks dress is literally life and death. In fact even dressed in suits they can still be murdered by cops, so imagine if they dress like society's notion of a thug!

I can only imagine why you think that some one walking around, hair uncombed, pants down to the knees and nasty underwear showing, sometimes even their butt cheeks, or upper pelvic hairs. But that is OK with you! In the 90s black kids were fashionable and ethnically "black" in their attire. In fact blacks have always led US fashion.

Now some just dress like criminals. Yes the low hanger style is from JAIL! Are you happy that style is now defined by the fact that in jail no belts are allowed, so pants hang low?
So what the way they dress is from jail? Mass incarceration means a significant number of Black people in the US have been to jail.

The way Black people dress is not life and death. The only time I wear suits is funerals and weddings. If anything dressing up can draw criminal attention to you, and not just in the US. I could say the same for much of Latin America. If you dress in a suit you need to go driving to and from work in that suit.

No one is going to wear suits to most social events, or wear them for most activities.

You're too desperate to separate yourself from being viewed as "bad".

If cops do kill Black people because of negative stereotyping, confront that instead of cowardly trying to dress like a good little boy.

Now suburban middle class black boys, who haven't suffered any experience with poverty, watch videos and think that looking like a criminal is being authentic.

You can blame Puffy, Russell Simmons, and others who said that this is "keeping it real" when in the early 80s many complained that they were offering poor role models to inner city black youths. Of course the West Coast mob were plain out criminals, and didn't even hide it, with their frequent shoot outs.

In fact all one needs to do is to listen to 80s rap to see how that genre wasn't always as degraded as it is now often promoted to be. Kid 'n Play, Public Enemy, Will Smith etc.
Speaking to older African Americans were major issues with crime before the 60s. You had drunks, addicts, gang bangers, and the like . This stuff isn't new.

So in 2016 we almost want to define "blackness" by the ghetto, even though fewer than 30% of blacks are poor. In the 20s when 80% of blacks were poor they refused to define themselves by this poverty. Look at how poor blacks dressed up to the 1950s compared to now and see the difference.
Who is "we"? What's poor?

Many poor Black people lived in shacks in that era and wore crappy clothes in their regular lives. They could scrape up enough money to get a suit or a nice dress to go to church. The first time I visited rural Alabama in the 80s, among the rural poor Blacks there people who still didn't have running water and who stunk because they didn't bathe. That wouldn't happen today because social services would intervene and take the children away.

Dressing crappy is not new among African Americans.

Huxatables got taken off the air because Bill Cosby raped multiple women. Drugged and raped them. The man is a sex offender.

Newsflash for you. The white kids who dress as they want, do all the drugs they want, etc still have no problems finding jobs (unless they become completely cracked out). Many of them even have good educations and find work in the tech sector, startup sector, and media sectors.

These people all do a lot better than Black kids who dress like they just came from Sunday school.

Therefore Black people should not care how they dress. It will not work out for them. Be yourself, and then figure out your own path.

Look at all the companies started by whites and Asians, while Black people are waiting for someone to "hire" them.

In NYC they get hired to work the bottom jobs, and that's where they'll remain because this is what happens when you wait to get "hired".

I understand the desire of Black parents to protect their kids from police encounters, but if you tell them by being super good they'll have success or move up in society you're lying too them.

Oh, we lived in a country where the President can grab women by the *****, and still become the President! And who knows what Trump was on when he said that..............

So no, clothes really don't matter and anyone not superficial can see that.

Actually not just whites, but other non Blacks tend to lump all Black people together. They will not make the distinction between middle class Black people and other Black people. Any Black person who looks down in this and acts a certain way to placate white people is a fool!

Fight against the overall marginalization of Black people. People of all races do drugs, but who gets incarcerated! White drug addicts don't get locked up en massse or shot by the police. Nor do Asians.

The US war on drugs has destabilized Latin America, as US imposed laws against drugs simply don't work and its gotten to the point where you have various legalization drives in Latin America.

I always found it silly to go after drug growing countries rather than tackling the root of the problem, namely millions of drug addicts within the US and Europe. Where there is demand, there is supply. Drug addicts suck, those weak, stupid people that just can't take life as it is and try to improve their situation in a sober way. Addicts also have blood on their hands, not just criminal drug traffickers. The term "recreational drugs" for instance is a joke that belittles vice.
