Family is extremely important in most African cultures. You are marrying into the family. You are marrying into his culture. That is how it is. I was in a serious relationship with a a Congolese guy I met in college. I was around his family, other Congolese people, or just Africans in general all the time. They were very accepting of me. Marriages between African men and African-American women can be successful, but as a woman, you have to go into it knowing that your marrying into his culture, and be prepared to raise your future children in his culture as well. I know quite a few African-Americn women married to African men. The unions are not as uncommon as people think.

OP, I'm a Yoruba female. Trust me when I say you dodged a bullet. Do no marry a man who does not protect you.

Even if he comes back asking you to marry him make sure you are happy with the way he stands up for you when any of his relatives make you uncomfortable or attempt to belittle you.

You don't want a man who will maltreat you because you do not have a male child though he knows that according to science only males have the Y chromosome and other circumstances that may arise in the future which are best for him to address and not you having to stand up for yourself.

Give yourself a few months and pick yourself up again! Xx
