Population growth from 1600-1850
Wikipedia says Africa may have lost 2.5% during this two and a half centuries, while Europe increased by 150%. In 1600 Europe and Africa had nearly identical populations.

Should we blame that on European exploitation?

Since 1850 wikipedia says Africa gained 968%, while Europe increased by 167%.

Is that anyone's fault?

So you tell us what the population growth in Africa was from 1000-1500 before Europeans went there.

Population growth is a result of improved agricultural output and medical achievements.

population growth in the world from 1000-1500
22.9% Africa
68.0% Europe
-9.7% Asia
14.5% Worldwide

Asia was 2/3 of world population in 1000, and about 1/2 in 1500.

It's difficult to imagine a world that grew a mere 14.5% in population over 5 centuries

I wonder if part of Europe's growth in the middle ages was because of immigration. Of course the words immigration and emigration didn't enter the English language until the 1600s. Back then they just referred to as "conquest", a word which entered the English language in the 1300's. In Old English conquer was probably "gegan".

A lot of Asian groups came and conquered parts of Eastern Europe like Hungary. The Moors had a thriving empire in Spain.
