What are the differences in appearance between the Hausa and Fulani in Nigeria (I'm talking about modern day appearance). If so, what physical characteristics differentiate the two tribes? Or do people really use the two tribes interchangeably (because online, people certainly do)?

What I am trying to say is that if you went to northern Nigeria, would you be able to point out a Hausa and point out a Fulani just by looking at them.

No^^^^
Only Hausa's and Fulanis can point each other out generally. While their is some differences the fact is Hausa differences in features and Fulani differences in features range a lot. The main difference IMO is some Fulani can look like someone from NE Niger, while some Hausa can look like someone from South Nigeria quite easily.

From my experience, the Hausa are pure black and the Fulani some seem pure black AND mixed black and are more medium-brown skinned which is a minority in West Africa. A Black American I knew lived in Nigeria and when she went to the north of the country, she saw light-brown people who they call "bright" I have heard several West Africans one being a Fulani
made the comment that I look Fulani (I am an AA) and the other one said many AAs look Fulani (one was from Nigeria the other from Sierra Leone from one of the major ethnic groups there.

My theory is that the Fulani are more mixed black with Arabs and would resemble AAs more as they are mixed with European and Native American. Both cases are racially mixed between Black African and Caucasoid. So to me, the Fulani
are more mixed with Arab while the Hausa are not...This of course is not set in stone...just an American opinion I probably got it all wrong.

The Hausa guy I know,is licorice black with very clear skin, had stereotypical African features ( broad nose, full lips)..
The Fula guy I know, he is tall, thin the color of Nelson Mandela, his features leaned toward more of a Somali Ethiopian,
type..a little less broad-nosed and full lipped.

One day they were arguing whether I looked Fulani or not, the Fulani guy said I did, the Hausa guy said I didn't...( The Fulani guy calls me "Fulani Man" as a nickname because I remind him of someone from his village I was told. ( I am AA).
