I'd read about it in Yemen, but it's a growing presence in Ethiopia, too.

For Ethiopia’s Underemployed Youth, Life Can Center on a Leaf

Khat is legal and remains so mainly because it is a big source of revenue for the government. But there are mounting concerns about its widespread use.

They've been chewing khat for thousands of years in East Africa and Yemen. It's a plant that is native to the region and chewing khat is very much a part of their culture. Khat is a stimulant, much the way coffee or redbull is.

Of course khat is demonized because Western corporate interests can't control the market on it. Meanwhile overdose is the leading cause of death in the US, and opiates and alcohol are the leading drugs.

Yes they have been using it for thousands of years but khat rots your brain. Makes you listless and prone to violent outbursts. It is NOT a stimulant like coffee and Red bull.

Please tell me your direct experience with khat.

If you've no direct experience with it, don't talk about things you don't know about.

Those societies have functioned for thousands of years using khat.

Having had some experience using drugs myself, you don't magically fall apart or have violent outbursts just because you've used drugs. For that matter, even alcohol.

Drugs may intensify emotions and sometimes bring buried issues to the front.

Exactly. It's probably a better reasoning to say that Ethiopia's real challenges center around the problems of political instability/turmoil, corruption and crackdowns by the government on political dissent, as simply about a widespread use of a stimulant.

I can understand the ignorance with khat (usually pronounced like the word cat or sometimes chat) because border security shows like Border Security Canada where Ethiopians/Somalians get arrested for transiting through Toronto or Vancouver with the stuff in their suitcase leading to the view that it must be a deadly drug.

Sure, it has it's harms if used incorrectly but so do other substances. Blaming drugs for the unemployment is similar to blaming guns for general violence in society. They are to be used in a manner that shows a respect for the undesirable consequences on the mind and body that may arise from extremely excessive or incorrect use.

Banning khat may reduce temporary problems but it won't get rid of the issues that drive young people to use khat and other drugs irresponsibly. These guys have problems if they need to constantly turn to drugs and banning them doesn't do anything.

Do people really believe that people lead who normal functional lifes and have little mental issues , take heroin, cocaine, khat, amphetamines and suddenly degenerate?
