Mostly West Africans culturally reflect French colonial culture, and East Africans reflect British.

The economies are very different. British east Africa formed with their own currencies, which were often eroded by corruption and black markets and inflation and speculation. By contrast, the French colonies were turned loose with a common currency that was guaranteed by the Bank of France, and the CFA franc was a stable convertible currency. This enabled francophone Africa to develop on the global credit exchanges.

The notable differences that a traveler would see, would be much higher prices in the west, where everything is priced now in what would be a derivative of the euro.

East Africans has more Indian communities, and genetically, there is a bit of genetic mixing with the Arabic world. Ethiopians, Somalians, coastlines of Kenya and Tanzania's Zanzibar, all reflect this. Black but with some Arabic-looking features. Subgroups: Uganda used to have a heavy Indian population (until they were forced out), and Kenya still does have large Indian communities - which makes East Africa a bit different as well. East Africa has a bit more of the India and Arabic influences and people's presence or sometimes mixing in it, etc. I'm not saying that East Africans look Indian or Arabic - they 100% look black and African but genetically have a bit of a different look.

West Africa...I usually think of BANTU...which origin is more West Africa, which pushed itself down into more southern areas as well. For people who don't know, Bantu is the stronger 'look' of most Africans, as we think of them, particularly from an Americas perspective. Granted there is an immense variety of African people...but if someone were to stereotype a generic African look, they most likely would describe or draw a genetically Bantu-looking person. The origin of that look originated in West Africa.

Bantu is more Central Africa than West Africa...From what I read from an American Ambassador who lived in West Africa...Generally, West Africans are dark-brown to blue-black, broad noses and full lips, East Africans. less
broad-nosed, full-lips a bit lighter, then the Somali types with keen features...There are exceptions in that I have known
some West Africans who were medium brown skinned and not mixed with any non-African blood.

A West African friend told me they do not get along with East Africans and consider them more primitive.
