It used to be that Amharic was THE language of Ethiopia. However, since the creation of regional states based on regional ethnicities and languages in the 1990s, has Amharic lost this status? Do the Oromo in Oromia and the Tigrayans in Tigray (among others) still learn Amharic well enough to converse in this language when they meet other Ethiopians from other states? In other words, is there a default language Ethiopians of different ethnic backgrounds use when they meet each other in Ethiopia or abroad and, if so, what is it?

Yes, Amharic is still the language of Ethiopia. It is a lingua franca of the country. Ethiopia is a multi lingual country more than 80 languages, most of them are not written languages. So Amharic is now used as a federal language instruction and some of states which have not written language or having many languages in a single state they use Amharic as a state language. Amharic uses an indigenous script called Ge'ez. It is given as a subject in all schools across the country and it is used as a means of school instruction in the state of Amhara where Amharic is their native language.
