It has been 400 years since slaves were brought to the Americas. Who has benefited from the African arrival, have African Americans built wealth and respect as a result?

Homelessness is rising in the USA what percent of the population are people of color? Jails can't wait for you to visit, schools can't wait to evoke the systematic mental slavery upon the youth, your color gives the trigger happy police the right to kill you, and the morgues are happy to take your money. Mental health is rising amongst people of color.

Africans that migrated go home, yes there are benefits in coming to America but don't fool yourself when I see videos like the one below it doesn't make sense to stay. What ever you love about the USA bring it to Africa. I know Africa isn't for everyone but seek asylum in countries like Singapore end the racial terrorism no place is worth this type of abuse.

Wealthy, educated, connected people will always have options. Without them, one will not be able to afford a Singapore or Switzerland or get in. Those who can live like kings in Africa, can do do provided they transpose their US incomes. But without wealth, education, or connections, only a handful of intrepid adventurers with a strong entrepreneurial spirit or some skill/asset can build a successful life in Africa from scratch.

Sandpointian,

You don't have to be wealthy to move to Africa but don't move broke either (that wouldn't make sense). One doesn't have to make the same salary made in the US in Africa (although ideal). The $$ is king that is for sure so if you can get paid in $$ that would be the best thing to do and there are ways to do this. For example people can teach, open a school, work for the USA government or NGO or open their own business. If you are receiving benefits from the USA that is also a win win. To be educated is ideal and always an added advantage, but I've known the less educated live abroad well not to mention educated people open farms or become investors. Many African countries need ideas and systems and do offer really good loans to help people abroad establish a business.

There are already people moving to Africa

People like Tyler Perry should open up a film school or make movies in Africa. If you are athletic start leagues or athletic facilities or stores. If you are into fashion there are many opportunities to establish a business, why not have items designed in the USA by AA designers and made in Africa and sold around the globe? Trash collection is a serious issue in Africa why not start a trash/recycling business (get a government contract). If you are a Silicon guru do your business in Africa. African Americans are the USA's largest consumer, why not spend it in Africa?

It's not difficult to make connections in Africa.

My strong suggestion for anyone interested in settling abroad
- Travel
-Connect with other people that have moved and have settled for a period of time and talk to people that didn't like it as well to see both sides and understand issues
-Keep at least 2 years worth of your income. I've seen people move with less than $10k and I couldn't do it and most likely those people moved back to the USA complaining that they couldn't make it but won't tell you that they spent all of their $$.
-Make friends quickly. Try to live with another expat for a few months to get familiar with the country or to meet other people.
-Think about amenities, if you want to live more remote, or more of a city life that will all play a role in relocating successfully
-If you don't speak the local language (which you should learn) go to an English speaking country (most Africans do speak English though)
-Transportation, look at import costs or how easy it is to get a car (many people get cars sent in from Europe) in most places you can hire a driver who will keep your car clean! There is also public transportation.
-Don't look for places to rent online - you will have to go to the country to find the best rates
-For people that have never lived anywhere else you will be homesick so finding communities and networks of people like you before you go is ideal
-Don't live like a visitor or you'll spend all of your $$$
-Since most African countries are in a state of transformation think big!
-Just know that no country in Africa is like the USA well that is because its Africa but you won't have to fear racism or racial tension you will at the end of the day have genuine respect. You can truly make Africa great again!

I think that the "Year of Return-400 years" is a good marketing theme created by the Ghana Ministry of Tourism, even though
it is for all of the African Diaspora it is obviously aimed at Black Americans. I think Ghana wants to receive a new source of
American money and American skills to further develop the country. Which is OK.

But I think it should be kept in mind that an American moving to Africa will have to make a BIG cultural adjustment and have
culture shock. I have read in some cases some in the Diaspora found the just could not adjust and ended up moving back to
their home countries.

Also, I think many Africans will see Black Americans only as Americans, not long-lost kin, I know because they have told me.
( One man from Ghana told me even if a person's parents were from Ghana, if that person was raised in America, he considered
them an American Black as that person was NO WAY raised in Ghanaian culture).

Sierra Leone is now getting into Black American Tourism also. Nigeria never got into it as I think they don't have time for it
and are thinking about their own survival. It was surprising to me to read of individual Black Americans who have gone to
Nigeria and just stayed now about 30 years. One guy went to visit a Nigerian buddy from college and ended up just staying there, never came back to the States except to visit. Others were thru marriage, they have totally adjusted to the culture
and environment.

The Cultural Adjustment is a big issue that needs to be taken into account.

Black Americans are the wealthiest, most privileged blacks in the world. They've had exactly the same opportunities as any other Americans for a half century. Stop blaming American society in general for your own community's failings and take responsibility for them. You're the only ones who can fix them because they're generally self-inflicted. But by all means, if you want to run away to Africa be my guest.

I think this is exhaustive in all due respect. There's plenty of Blacks that have move to African countries yet the vast majority of us will remain here in the U.S. It's home to put it midly and some will network with different cultures & businesses from Africa.

Sidenote: I still don't get where 400 years come from when it's not accurate. By now i view that as a poor slogan.
