I will be interviewing at Aultman Hospital in a week and then may be moving to the Canton area the beginning of 2011. I will be looking for a single home rental up to about $1200/month.

Right now I live in a beautiful 1920's home in Rochester NY in a great suburban neighborhood (Irondequoit). I'd be happy in an equivalent neighborhood but my real preference would be something more rural.

I have no idea as to the better areas around Canton and thought I'd start by looking for some advice here. Most of the homes listed on Craigslist are so inexpensive that I wonder if they're in crappy neighborhoods/towns.

TIA for any advice you can offer,
Bonnie

I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but I haven't lived in the Canton area for over 10 years now. (but I was born at Aultman Hospital ) I grew up mostly in Perry Heights--the suburb west of Canton--and I don't remember any rural or suburban areas having a bad reputation. Unless the houses you're looking at happen to be close to mobile home parks or something, I'd guess the overall cost of housing is just less in the Canton area than what you're used to.

You should look at the Jasckson Township area. Great schools and shopping as well. There's some really cute houses well in your price range on Revere Ave. which might fit in with your rural needs.

If you haven't already moved here, I would rethink it. People are flocking out of this area in lieu of the job losses, and most are heading to Columbus. If you're working at Aultman (the main hosp), I'd second the Jackson home search, but be prepared to spend a pretty penny. The rest of the area is pretty much in the crapper anymore.
