Hi, after lurking for a while, I thought I'd ask board members for advice on this matter. My wife & I have been looking for rental houses in the Akron/Cuyahoga Falls area for some time now to no avail. It seems as though nobody advertises in the paper anymore; Craigslist appears to be the new format. But there's no guarantee you get an honest landlord there - it's often frightening how deceptive people are. We've "caught" (read: it later came out) people hiding info about the house, previous tenants, etc. And the rents! For a small starter cape in the Falls they're charging nearly $1000 a month! So my questions are these:

We found our current rental on craigslist after perusing it for a couple of months. It's turned out to be a great deal for us. If you do find a place on there, ALWAYS look it up with (1) google streetview and (2) what your county's auditor's website says about it.

They exist but I don't know of a way to weed them out ahead of time. I haven't rented in several years but I do know it will take a while to find a property that fits physical, monetary, and location criteria.
$1000 seems a little high for a cape in the Falls ... but what do I know. Other issue you may be running into is there are more people underwater on their mortgages (can't sell) that are renting them out, however they need to cover their mortgage payments with the rent. That'll cause some to be unrealistic. Best advice I can say is keep looking... the more you see the more you'll find that fit.
